Horst P Horst

  • Born in Germany on August 14, 1906

  • Horst Paul Albert Borhmann

  • Studied at Hamburg in 1920's

    • Moved to Paris and studied architecture ​

  • While in Paris he met Baron George Hoyningen-Huene and became his assistant

  • in 1937 he lived in an apartment in New York City and met Coco Chanel and photographed her fashion for 3 decades

  • In 1938 he met Valentine Lawford and adopted a son, Richard J Horst

  • He joined the army in 1943 and became an army photographer

  • In 1945 he took pictures of Harry Truman and very first lady in post war period at the White House invitation

  • In the 1960's he began photographing "lifestyles of international high society" as well as in the 1970's he began working for House & Garden magazine in addition to Vogue

  • Had 9 photos published in "Life" magazine

  • He did this until he died at age 93 ​

  • Mostly photographed fashion

  • Became a photographer for Vogue with many of his pictures being the cover page

  • Also photographed architecture, and still lifes

  • He thought lighting and studio props was very important for a good photo

  • Most photos are in black and white and seen as elegant
